“New Netherland, NY, Beginnings” is an initiative to reconstruct the history of the early period of New Netherland that occurred between 1609 and 1624. This area was formally named New Netherland in 1614 when it was officially chartered by the “Staten Generaal,” the government of the “United Provinces” as the Netherlands was known at the time, to the “New Netherland Company” as a region for trade for the company’s network of Dutch traders and merchants. New Netherland covered the area now contained within the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and, in the later years, parts of Delaware.
